Tips For Taking Online Beauty School Classes

Wish we could be on campus with our ARTIST’s but instead, we’re bringing campus to you! 🏫➡️💻.

The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) just launched temporary distance-learning or temporary online learning for our cosmetology and esthetics programs. Just like it is for you, it is new to us as well. We are all a little stressed and adapting to our new world as quickly as possible. To make your transition into the beauty world smooth, here are our top 3 tips to help you launch your online classes –

Tips For Online Learning:

  1.  Manage your time. Set up a view of your daily & weekly schedule by first mapping out a calendar of all of the assignment and activity due dates along with work and family commitments. It’s okay to be selfish, block off time each week to get classwork done. Online classes tend to have a weekly flow and include discussion boards that require student participation. Plan to be a part of the conversation.
  2. Be a good participant. Good discussions are thoughtful, your best resources to help you bring good discussion starters can be from peer conversations, headlines, lecture and course materials. Great responses go beyond agreeing with your peers. Build on the discussion with your own ideas and experiences.
  3. Build your social community. Share contact information with your peers to connect on homework assignments and for social support. Be a part of  TSPA’s Facebook pages for enrolled students to get the best information fast and easy access to peer conversations on campus and homework topics. Your campus is here to support you every step of the way. Online students benefit from the same support as on-campus students, including help with financial aid to questions about technique.

Be kind to yourself. We are all in uncharted territory right now but we all have each other’s support even if it’s temporarily from a distance right now.

Trade School Grads Are On Demand for Cosmetologists

It’s Not Too Late To Do What You Love!

Making the decision to go back to school can be a very scary one, especially if you have been out of an academic atmosphere for a while. We all experience fears, but the courage to move forward and embark on a new career can be very awarding. The below account is from one of our students who decided to start a new career in her 40’s.

I would like to tell you a little bit about my journey of going to cosmetology school. Just to start a little background on me. I am a 41 year old widow who is raising two beautiful girls on my own, so going back to school full – time at my age with two girls that are also in school has been quite a bit of a challenge.

I started school in July 2019. The first 10 weeks they call foundations Boot Camp, and boy let me tell you they are not kidding, it is Boot Camp for sure! People have a tendency to think that cosmetologist are stupid or that we don’t have brains. Some may think we don’t work hard or have the intelligence to do what we do but, they are very mistaken. I, myself, was very shocked by what it takes to become a cosmetologist.

The things that we have to learn are mind blowing at times.  I had to make sure my math skills were good for figuring fractions, angles, adding and subtraction, memorizing chemistry, and still so much more.  You go over a lot of theory and testing in the first 10 weeks. I honestly went into this thinking it was going to be easy. However, I have discovered it is tough but worth every challenge and all the knowledge I have gained in the first 10 weeks.  I have loved and enjoyed the challenge of learning something new. It truly has changed my life for the better!

When you begin servicing your clients one on one, it makes you realize how important and how much connection you have, to put it all together for your client. We are a select group of professionals who hold a license to touch. It has become one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life. The smiles you can put on people’s faces just be a small or even a big transformation is very rewarding. I wouldn’t change my decision to go back to school. The support and encouragement that The Salon Professional Academy gives to their students is amazing. I am so excited to finish out my education and be a part of this incredible industry.

Don’t let fear stop you from making a career change or going back to school. The challenge that we face in life help define who we are and broaden our futures.

The Power of Pre-Booking

Would you like to increase your income for 2020? Pre-booking is the answer! Back in the day we relied on doing 12-18 clients a day just to get the bills paid. Thank goodness we have gotten smarter!

Pre-booking is the way to financial success in our industry. Take the time to talk to your client about their future appointments. Pre-booking should never feel awkward. If we teach our clients how to maintain the looks they love, then pre-booking is a no brainer. Our male clients don;t want to have to think about setting up an appointment.

Just book them every 2-3 weeks before they leave the salon. Trust me; clients will make their appointments work with their upcoming schedules.

Don’t let color or facial clients leave without educating them on how at home maintenance is critical to overall longevity to their service 1 facial every 6 months will not move the needle in the skin care challenges. Pre-book your client so they understand success with their services is all about timing.

Most of us at one time or another has said “I need a haircut, NOW!” This means at least another 1-3 weeks before we can get in to see our favorite service provider. Don’t do your client a disservice, start taking control of your books and your income in 2020.

You will be surprised how easy it is!

Why Traditional College isn’t the ANSWER

While college is certainly appropriate for some students and a prerequisite for some professions, crippling student debt, lack of job opportunities, and growing interest in pursuing passions outside the university path are driving students to explore a skills-based education. “The skills gap is the number one problem American businesses face”, said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, in a statement.  For too long, a four-year degree has been touted as the best option for success after high school; “We start to believe that the best path for the most people happens to be the most expensive path,” said Mike Rowe, best known for his popular TV show ‘Dirty Jobs’. “And it also happens to be the path that has led to a skills gap of about 5.8 million positions and student loans of about 1.3 trillion …”

Rowe maintains we’ve done a disservice to high school students with our short-sighted focus on college. In fact, 36% of millennial college graduates with student loans now say they would have skipped college if they had understood the cost, research shows. Then there are the 30% of college students who go to public universities and 20% who attend private schools who haven’t earned degrees within six years, according to the National Student Clearinghouse. They racked up big bills without getting a college diploma in the process.

“About 40 years ago, we started telling the current generation that the best path for the most people was a four-year degree,” said Rowe. “But what happened …  is they wound up promoting one form of education at the expense of all the other forms. College became higher education and apprenticeship programs, trade schools, community colleges, and all the job training opportunities, those became alternatives to education.”

With a higher-than-average job placement rate, an industry that has shown a growth for 30+ consecutive years, and an education-to-career track several years shorter than traditional colleges and universities, beauty school could prove to be more than just realizing your passion as a career…it could be the smartest professional career decision you can make!

History OF Hairstyling

Choosing how to style your hair for a special event can be a stressful challenge.  Many times, we choose a hair style based on the outfit we are going to wear. We want to make a statement!  But how do you choose?  One way is to look back at the history of hairstyles.  Many styles and trends that we look to now are versions of popularity from the past.

Up-swept messy buns and up-dos are reminiscent of the Victorian era; sleek side swept looks that incorporate soft waves follow the 20’s and 30’s bobs and finger waves.  History is a great place to inspire our creativity.  Choose your favorite time in history and see what ideas you come up with for your next holiday get together.  Sleek or smooth, full and fiery or edgy or composed, the choice is yours.
